On 6 February 1685, ‘Good King Charlie II of Merrie Englande’ dies from a stroke, leaving behind no legitimate heir. His younger Catholic brother ascends according to bloodline and becomes James II.
In 1674, Henry Morgan is released from the Tower of London on piracy charges; Charles II connives ’twixt ‘Nobleman and Knave’ that his freedom depends on sending a tenth of all captured Spanish gold and silver back to the King’s war-depleted coffers.
Henry Morgan is afforded a knighthood and the lieutenant-governorship of Jamaica. Morgan begs a royal pardon on his retirement, allowing him to return to Wales.
Agreement with England’s royalty ceases with the ascendancy of a Catholic monarch, as Morgan is a devout Methodist. The parley is released on Charles’s deathbed order to the clerk Sir Digby Carew.
James II receives French bursaries providing he returns England to Catholicism; so a Kingsman is sent to swap the pardon with a fakery.
The ‘whispered pardon’ is en route by courier to the ‘Shippe Inne’ in Uplyme village; all does not bode well for Kingsman D’Arcy Ingrams, tasked to track and swap the fakery.
A highwayman robs the coach with dire consequences.
